How To bring Mid-Century Modern Style To Your Home

How to bring Mid-Century Modern style to your home

Do you love the timeless quality of design style from the mid-thirties to mid-sixties? High-quality furnishings made of teak, walnut, oak and rosewood were used around this time. This style has distinguished features like clean lines with materials such as plywood, glass, metal, plexiglass and has become popularly known as Mid-Century Modern.

This Mid-century modern design style living room calls for a bright and airy feel that can be achieved by bright white walls. My favourite is to go to white Sherwin-Williams Pure White. It's got a bit of want so space does not feel too stark and all the furnishings in the space gets extra attention.

When it comes to light fixtures, they are not only functional but also considered a piece of art. Brightly polished light fixtures supporting oversized lights are the staples of mid-century modern style lighting. Go-to includes hanging globe pendants, spherical ceiling fixtures.

In this living room, Manchester 8 Light features a streamlined design that is unforgettably classic. A sofa with a tuxedo style frame with velvet channel tufting and slim wooden legs is also paired with a couple of the Elle chairs from TOV is upholstered in a supremely fab metallic linen that shimmers from all angles. A timeless abstract rug anchors the furnishings. The Tempo cocktail table adds  glamorous style to any space. Accent tables with a unique enamel top will create interest.

When choosing artwork go for the abstract and asymmetrical patterns. You can introduce geometric forms and patterns on a rug and pillows as well. Thinking of which colours you should go with then your options are really open from neutral to bold. Adding a burst of colour creates an instant interest in a room.

5 Things to know before you buy a table lamp

Blog post-1-Cover Page-5 things to know before you buy a table lamp.png

Before you go shopping to style your interiors with a perfect table lamp, think about what you want to achieve in your space. Do you want to make a statement, bring symmetry, add colour and texture to space?

Here are 5 things to know about table lamps:

Choosing lampshades:

Lampshades come in various shapes such as drum, oval, cylinder, square, tapered Etc. If you're looking to achieve a modern look, drum-shaped has a more streamlined look. Tapered shaped shades are best for a traditional look.

Which lamp base is best for me?

Lamp bases come in different shapes and materials such as ceramic, glass, metal, wood. Choose one that best resonates with the design style in your space.

 Picking the right size:

The last thing you want is to pick a table lamp that looks disproportionate to the scale of the furniture it's placed onto. A large table lamp on a small console table will look odd and vice versa.

 The functionality of table lamps:

Before picking a table lamp decide whether they are used for reading or strictly for aesthetic purposes. Table lamps are great for providing Layered lighting in conjunction with direct lighting. If used as task lighting for reading make sure they are at eye level when you are seated.

  Choosing a light bulb:

Ambient lighting is very important in every room. Typically a dining room has a chandelier and you will need the buffet lamps to provide ambient lighting. A 40 Watts light bulb will be perfect for ambient lighting. But if you're choosing a table lamp for the bedroom or living room you need 60 watts which is good for reading.

Hopefully, these tips will help you in choosing a perfect table lamp/s. If you are looking for lamps under $300, I have some selected pieces just for you! You can click on the one you like and purchase.

How To Style A Console Table

I bet you have heard about the phrase the first impression is the last impression. The entryway is the first thing guests notice when they enter your house, why not style it so it's aesthetically beautiful as well as functional.

Here are our go-to styling tips:

Step 1: Introduce a console table

Find a console table that fits well in your entryway and goes with your design style.

Step 2: Add fillers.

If you choose to go with a console table with an empty base, store a couple of stools that can act as fillers.

Step 3: Anchor the console table with a mirror or artwork.

Step 4: Add a lamp.

A lamp will provide coziness and a welcoming feeling. Don't be afraid to choose a lamp with different textures and shapes.

 Step 5: Add greenery

A vase with floral stems is a nice way to introduce liveliness. You can also use a faux planter.

Step 6: Add little accessories to provide different height and interest.

Some accessories you can choose from are stacked books, decorative objects, trays or boxes.
